Four friends celebrate their reunion. They met in Mariupol in 2014, when the two Germans, Maria and Lukas, were doing research for a university project. Together with Anastasia and Orestes, they lived through the beginning of the war that same year and fled the city together. They kept in touch, wrote to each other and visited each other. When the new attack on Mariupol happened in 2022 they were all in different places: in Berlin, Chile, in Kyiv and in Mariupol itself. Now the four of them gather in a spacious old apartment in Berlin and reminisce about their student days. How should they behave in the face of war? What suffering, but also what new forms of life, does war cause? How can you practice resistance against injustice?

“I think it's impossible to completely disconnect news from war zones and then just make art. These wars directly affect our societies, also here in Berlin," underlines director Zhyrkov

“Postcards from the East” is part of a collaboration between European theaters under the title “Landscapes of Devastation: Resistance and Collaboration”, supported by the Educational Agenda on Nazi Injustice of the Memory, Responsibility and Future Foundation (EVZ). Together with LaJoven in Madrid and the National Theater of Northern Greece in Thessaloniki, the project explores collaboration and resistance against Nazi injustice.

Ukrainian director Stas Zhyrkov stages the play by Pavlo Arie and Martín Valdés-Stauber about collaboration and resistance in times of war. Stas Zhyrkov directs in Ukraine, Germany, Switzerland and Lithuania. From 2014 to 2019 he was artistic director of the Golden Gate Theater Kyiv and from 2019 to 2022 in the same position at the Left Bank Theater Kyiv.
